Review:Hmmm… I keep reading and hoping and reading and hoping that the series struggles out of this 3 star slump it’s been in for me already years. Again, this next installment had some awesome parts and things I always expect and love about these books, but then again it had so many aspects that just continue dragging the series further down, so unfortunately 2 stars this time – it just didn’t rise above that. I’m genuinely sad!
This book had some unexplored plot devices for the series, for example, most of the action taking place in a medieval-like demon dimension, fairies, Britannia and so on. So it definitely had some fresh ideas and new paths not crossed before. Thanks to this, the book had a different vibe to it than the previous ones, which was unexpectedly pleasant.
I think one of the most anticipated aspects about this series are the hints, clues and information given regarding the multitude of intriguing, mysterious and compelling characters introduced. They are the ones you want to know more about, but Kenyon keeps a tight grip on every piece of itty bitty info and I predict she will eternally keep you craving for more, because the amount of such characters she creates isn’t exactly small and at least in every book there is a new addition to this elite secretive club of hunks. At times it annoys me, but the joy of finding out something new always compensates for the frustration. Also, in this installment, we get a lot, but not nearly enough regarding one of the members of this elusive club: Thorn. The tidbits were intriguing to say the least, especially the one in the very end before the epilogue.
I was extremely heart-warmed to see Ash and Styxx getting along so well and truly behaving like loving brothers. Theirs were one of the most memorable moments in the book.
Now to the cons:
I didn’t feel that there was a significant conflict or final obstacle in the book, of course, there was something, but it was too shallow and too easily brushed aside or at least it came across as such. There were again old loved characters just stuffed into the book without any substantial purpose, I want better for them to than just be mentioned or have one line of dialogue just for the sake of it. The story was too rushed and handled too superficially, especially during the second half and the same was with the romance, which is sad because the potential was all there, honestly, there was sooo much promise and I was so excited for this book.
Something that’s started to really bug me: I’m at a point where I need a summary, diagram or anything that will help sort out all the relations and connections between all the characters. I was so lost several times when new info and background knowledge regarding characters and their relations were thrown out there. Also, can there be a stop to the most-powerful-being craze, it’s like each new or even old character is more powerful than the last. When you think this is the über boss, then another comes along who makes mice out of the last ones.
Something about the characters:
I liked Cadegan, he was sympathetic, kickass and tortured, but not in an overdoing kind of way. Despite everything, he was a nice guy not some bitter and hateful badass. That was a pleasant surprise and kind of refreshing.
Jo, I wasn’t really that fond of, because while I adore smarty-pants and sarcastic heroines, she was just too much. Almost everything she said had some “hilarious” remark in it, at times it was so inappropriate and so against the mood of the situation that it got bothersome quickly.
Overall:
The world of the Dark-Hunter series is fascinating, vast and addicting and I sincerely hope it will find its way out of this slump! That’s all I’m going to say.

I've started the dark hunter series with book 1 in the year 2007 and I've been addicted and hooked since! This world keeps growing and morphing! I hope it never stops!! I've read, re-read, and read some of the stories a third time even! I keep every book and I plan to continue reading and reading again all the way to my death bed. Needless to say, I'm a huge fan ! She just has this incredible imagination and ability to tell a story. The sarcasm & intertwining stories are my favorite parts. Haha the steamy romances and shocking twists and turns are a fabulous part of her writing as well.
This is book 18 in the Dark Hunter series. Because so many characters from past books have popped up in this book, I would advise reading the series in order to be able to understand who the other characters are.
Cadegan has been trapped in an alternate realm for more than a thousand years. Trapped there by his brother, the one person he thought he could count on. He doesn't understand why his brother wouldn't at least listen to his side of the story before sending him to this hell.
Josette has a strange family but they are there for her when she needs them the most. Her divorce took all of her savings and now that she's been laid off, she's in a real pickle. But once again her family comes through for her and she gets a photography job that pays well because all previous people hired, ran away soon after getting hired. The job? A haunted house, but Jo isn't scared. She's more fascinated since she really doesn't believe in the paranormal like her family does. That is, until she falls through a mirror and is transported to the realm that Cadegan is trapped in.
Cadegan finds Jo soon after she finds herself in this alternative realm and saves her from some monsters that like to bite. Right away they hit it off and the banter between the two of them is so much fun. While he's really old and from another time, he's been able to get glimpses of how the world is from where he is trapped and while he understands some of what she says, not everything is clear language wise between them, which was really funny.
They fall hard for each other, get sent on a quest and even meet a dragon along the way. Cadegan wants nothing more than to see her safely back home and puts his life on the line to do it. I don't usually go for the insta-love story line but it really works for these two when you find out who Artemis thinks they are and their whole back story. I liked seeing characters from previous books including, Ash, Styxx, Artemis and Simi. I love getting a glimpse into the lives of some of the characters that I've come to love and after 18 books, I'm fully immersed in the lives of these characters and wanting to see what's happened after their books.
I let this book sit on my kindle for about 6 months because Acheron and Styxx are two of my very favorite books in this series and I really wasn't sure either one of them could be topped. But I came into this not wanting for those books to be topped, just for this story to be a good continuation of the series and this was definitely a great book in the series. The book ended with me feeling very satisfied as to where this series has gone and I'm looking forward to reading more. The different lores, the different mythologies and story lines as well as different genealogy lines and reincarnations of characters make this a series that you really have to pay attention to the details but if you like that sort of series, then I would definitely give this one a try.
