Spring arrives in Fairbanks, Alaska, and its citizens are looking forward to the warmer temperatures, but not the blast of heat from hell that greets them in Polar Day, by Julie Flanders.

Detective Danny Fitzpatrick has survived his first winter in the frozen north and still questions the things he’d witnessed in Polar Night, the first book by Ms. Flanders. But he barely has time to figure out that truth, when suddenly the citizens of Fairbanks are being burned alive. Seemingly from the inside out and with no apparent catalyst.

And while Aleksei Nechayev, has left the state, he still manages to make an appearance in the heat of the mystery and without suffering even the slightest burn, much to Fitzpatrick’s consternation.

A great second mystery for the talented Ms. Flanders, an easy and quick read that moves from scene to scene with escalating terror and a conclusion that’s gratifying!

Highly recommended!

Polar Day Julie Flanders 9781939156631 Books Reviews

good summer read
The only sad thing is I finished the book in record time because I couldn't put it down! Well structured and lots of twists......read Polar Night and Ghosts of Aguinnah too...both excellent!
Really enjoyed reading this!
A great read full of suspense and mystery. Flew through this book and look forward to number three. Great characters and a very enjoyable story.
Julie Flander's has a deliciously twisted mind. And I say that as a compliment! Ms. Flanders weaves a tale of magical horror that made me cringe.
From her debut novel, Polar Night to her prequel, The Turnagain Arm, she's melded them all together in Polar Day.
As with her other books, her writing is flawless and has interesting facts concerning Alaska.
I really liked how the diabolical Aleksei Nechayev makes an appearance in Polar Day, and actually helps (in his arctic, vampy way) Danny in solving this case.
I never give away spoilers, however, Ms. Flander's has left the door open for another intriguing story. I hope.
In a perfect follow-up to her earlier "Polar Night", which plunged readers into a terrifying world of frigid arctic darkness, Flanders now exposes readers to a sizzling terror under Alaska's relentless midnight sun. In the midst of Fairbanks' record-smashing heat wave, several people have burst into flames and died an excruciating death. Detective Danny Fitzpatrick saw a strange shadow in front of one of the victims before smoke started to emanate from his body, and other witnesses heard a man's voice chanting bizarre-sounding words, but the police have no forensic evidence and no reasonable explanation for what's been happening.

So maybe it's time to look for unreasonable explanations. Ever since Danny's horrific encounter with a vampire, he's ready to believe just about anything is possible. The one thing he never expected was that he'd ever have to turn to that same vampire for help. But he has no choice. The killer has only been playing with fire so far; now he's given fair warning. He going to destroy the entire city, and time is running out.

Another gooooood and creepy book from this writer. Four and a half stars, rounded up to five.
It starts with a jogger bursting into flames. Detective Danny Fitzpatrick can't figure out how it ignited and neither can the police arsonist specialist. The case doesn't make any sense, but Danny has met with a monster before. If there's no logical explanation for the fires, he must search outside the box. And as much as he hates it, the only one that might be able to help him is the vampire Aleksei Nechayev, the monster that still haunts his dreams.

An excellent sequel to Polar Night with plenty of suspenseful and intense moments. I've never been to Alaska, but I felt as if I were transported there with the amazing descriptions. Especially the little details. And instead of freezing, it was an unusually hot summer where the sun sets for only a few hours. The setting really came alive.

I'm still a big fan of Danny, the gruff and flawed detective. His partner Tessa is the perfect balance for him, but she's just as determined as he is, and what's more, she believes in him. When everything seems against them, they make a powerful team. I was really excited to see Aleksei back. Even more so, to get a little peek at what's been going on with him.

This is a must read for all fans of supernatural and horror stories.
