Fearless Dartmoor Volume 1 Lauren Gilley 9781505588392 Books

Fearless by Lauren Gilley was recommended to me by another reader named Kandace, and blogger Reanell from Book Babes Unite. They told me that it was a great MC read, but what I didn’t know was that this book reaches beyond the MC genre, it’s mystery, suspense, romance, one could say that this book is the jambalaya of the literary world; it has a little of everything, and it’s absolutely delicious.

But before I go any further, I’m want to toss out a warning, something that I wished I had known BEFORE I began this book. No, it wouldn’t have prevented me from reading the story, but I would have been better prepared and saved myself and my family some tense moments. This book is long, and I mean looooong, and when I say that, I don’t mean that in a negative way, but that I would have organized and arranged my schedule a little better. I began the story on July 3rd, I read it for a couple of hours before falling asleep, and I thought the next day that I would spend a few hours reading it before I went hiking, then take the kids out for the 4th of July celebration. I was wrong, so very, very wrong. Like 12 hours wrong. My plans went as far south, as the Cajun shack that the cool drink of creole water named Mercy lived in. I’m warning you that you won’t be finishing this book in 4 or 5 hours, so before you begin, go ahead and fix the kids breakfast, lunch and dinner so that way they won’t hassle you every 4 hours with “Mom, I’m starving, and I want more than chocolate this time”, go ahead and give your S.O. a quickie in the bedroom so that he doesn’t hassle you later, turn off your phone, because you aren’t going to want to stop reading once the action begins. Trust me, I’m the voice of experience.

Okay, now that I have that little warning out of the way, I will give you a quick breakdown, because I have other things that I’ve neglected all day with this book, and I need to move on with my life. The story revolves around Ava, the college grad who is moving back to her hometown to live with her parents and attend grad school. Ava’s father is the V.P. of the Lean Dogs MC, which basically means that her family and her past have always been entwined with the biker world. Ava left that world five years ago; her new life and new love is about as removed from the one percenter’s lifestyle as she could possibly get, and Ava soon discovers that her new lifestyle and love doesn’t quite mesh with the family and friends that she left behind.

Once Ava is back home, the story alternates between fourteen years ago and the present time. The story also is told from different POVs: Ava’s and Mercy’s……mmmmmm mmmm mmm, lord have Mercy when that man drops some Creole terms of endearments on her. I loved how the story focuses not on the lives of Ava and Mercy, but also friends and family from both the past and present. The stories from the past are as intriguing as the present day lives unfolding. One character in particular is Maggie, Ava’s mother. I love that the author wrote this character intelligent, sexy, maternal, and witty, and I couldn’t get enough of Maggie. Ghost may be the president of the MC, but Maggie was the dang queen, and she wore that crown like a freakin’ boss. Hint: If there is a book about Maggie and Ghost’s history, I would pre-order it, and I don’t ever pre-order a book.

Betrayal/disloyalty seems to be the key theme in the present time. Brother betrayed by brother, family betrayed by family, club betrayed by members, lovers betrayed, even the entire town at some point dishes out disloyalty to the ones who have worked most of their lives protecting it. The story doesn’t move back in time, it also moves locations, and the reader is given an accurate portrayal of Mercy’s life on the bayou.

This story just has so much that I could write pages trying to explain why I love it: it’s the perfect blend of MC, love, angst, mystery, suspense, and MAGGIE. So instead of me writing any more, trust me, just buy the book.

Fearless Dartmoor Volume 1 Lauren Gilley 9781505588392 Books Reviews

I really wanted to like this book. This is the first time I’ve read anything by Lauren Gilley and I was looking forward to what I thought was going to be a long, well written, MC love story. I actually even liked the story, it WAS well written. I just couldn’t find a way to like Mercy and I tried, I mean 6 and a half foot of muscle bound tall-dark-and-handsome bodyguard? What’s not to like?!! I’ll tell you.

*** Spoiler Alert ****

The age difference between Mercy and Ava is 13 years. That in itself I didn’t so much have a problem with; I was thinking ‘outlaw MC culture’ and ‘ok, here we go’. The problem was that he RAISED her from the time she was 8, I believe — she was very young. Her mom was around and her dad less so, but Mercy was responsible for protecting Ava so he took care of her. I could have even gotten past that except it was thrown in my face repeatedly through the book. Ava constantly refers to Mercy’s affection as being paternal and Mercy refers to Ava as “little girl” even during sex. Ugh.

But my specific dislike for Mercy started when they became intimate. She was 17 and he was 30, and he was jealous of a boyfriend. She was already head over heels for Mercy and he was denying similar feelings because of the age difference and because her dad is the MC president. Anyway he starts touching her and questioning if the boy had ever touched her like that, then he asks if anyone had touched her, she said no and he proceeded with taking her virginity. He was extremely rough with her though, she was obviously in a lot of pain and he says something like “omg Ava, why didn’t you tell me?” Except, of course, she DID just before they moved to the bedroom and then he just continues on like he’s still oblivious. She cried through the entire ordeal and when it was over he essentially told her to use bleach for the blood stains and he was outta there. I get that he was freaked, but seriously, like she wasn’t??! AND for all the time he spent protecting her, he didn’t protect her!! Neither of them brought up the idea of a condom. All I could think is “what’s the point of giving a 30 y/o you love your virginity if he’s just going to behave like a teenager?” The author had a great opportunity to use his experience to make Ava’s first time meaningful and her readers fall in love with Mercy. Instead, he came across as an immature jack@ss.

Throughout the book, Mercy is described as child-like, he’s insecure, and at times, completely pitiful. There’s nothing sexy about any of those things. There were moments that somewhat redeemed him, but mostly it was an exercise in wondering WTH.

Again, though, the story was good. It definitely held my attention. There were some loose ends, but I have to assume they will get addressed in the next book. I will be reading the next book, btw. I probably would be giving this one 4 stars if Mercy hadn’t been portrayed as an... immature pedo?? I don’t know really how to sum it up, but his character was awful. It’s really unfortunate because there was so much potential.
I couldn't decide whether to give 4 or 5 stars for Fearless. I finally decided on 5 stars and here's why.

I had a rough time reading Fearless in the first 10% percent because of all the descriptions. She describes EVERYTHING. But once I got past that 10% mark, I was HOOKED! I love a good MC book and I love finding a hidden gem with them. This is that hidden gem. That's why I decided on 5 stars. It completely pulled me into the story 100%.

I would say it is tied with Undeniable by Madeline Sheehan as my favorite MC book. It's THAT GOOD! It has over 800 pages of hot biker men, heart pounding suspense, and a storyline that will pull at your heart-strings. I fell in complete book love here folks.

I already want to start over and re-read Fearless because I'm not ready to move on yet. These characters are special to me and I have a feeling I won't be forgetting them any time soon.

I am begging you, if you decide to try Fearless, PLEASE, PLEASE PLEASE give it a chance past that initial 10 or 15%. Once she gets the story line set it's absolutely amazing! And it's only $3.99 for 800 pages!

So go buy your copy and fall in love with characters like I did.

**WARNING**
Contains some themes that some may not be comfortable with. There is a considerable age gap between the main characters Ava and Mercy. (It's set in a way that it works)
