Favorite Character and Why:I loved Selina. She is a Kentucky girl (like me) and had some ways about her that just didn't make sense to her new family out west. (I have family in Idaho, too, so I could relate.) The challenges she faces and the hopes she have resonate with every woman I know. Not to mention she was just plain funny.
What I liked:
I loved how this wasn't your typical mail-order bride story, yet it was. Michael had to overcome prejudices and learn to love his wife instead of the fantasy woman he built up in his mind and Selina had to learn to be happy with who she was as a wife.

The Unlikely Wife Love Inspired Historical Debra Ullrick 9780373829026 Books Reviews
THis is one of my favorite love inspired stories. The heroine is just what the groom DIDN'T expect which creates its own bag of trouble but the way both characters grow and develop is wonderful. This is a story that will "grab your guts" as you feel for the characters and root for them. The heroine is true to herself although different from the women around her but is also willing to leave her comfort zone to make her husband smile. A gem of a book. There's some marital longing in the book and for this reason I couldn't recommend it for young readers but it is clean and respectful.
When I bought this book, I didn't realize that it was by the same author as The Unexpected Bride (Love Inspired Historical) until Kitty and Miss Piggy made appearances. I must say, though, that I enjoyed this book, The Unlikely Wife (Love Inspired Historical) mush more than Ullrick's previous book. I enjoyed the heroine's dialect written into the dialogue, as it added to her spunk and really helped me to imagine the character more easily. And I especially loved her outlook to enjoy the beauty in everything, even the little things in life. I did find the end (or beginning of the ending) a bit cliched, as the hero doesn't realize what the heroine means to him until [spoiler alert!] she almost dies. And it does take both of them a long time to actually move forward and have a real marriage. I found that stringing out the ending like that was a little frustrating. But overall a good, fun read. I would definitely read another book by Debra Ullrick, and recommend this one.
This is one of my favorite books. He prays for a gentile southern bride and marries her sight unseen. She wears pants, cowboy hat and boots and caries a rifle. He grieves that he married her. She loves him and tries to please him. She is a beautiful pure woman inside and out. Read this story, it is awesome.
Debra Ullrick has done it again! She is one of my favorite authors because she has the ability to weave a story together that makes you feel like you're right there with the characters. I fell in love with the Bowen family in, The Unexpected Bride and now here they are again in, The Unlikely Wife. Yay!
One of my favorite scences is in the very beginning of the book, when Michael Bowen first set eyes on Selina, his mail-ordered bride.
"This has to be a nightmare! Standing in front of Michael Bowen at the Paradise Haven's train station was the woman who claimed to be his wife. His eyes traveled up and down the length of her. Instead of a dress, she wore a red scarf draped around her neck, a black cowboy hat with a stampede string, black cowboys boots and brown loose-fitting trousers. In her hands she held a Long Tom black powder rifle. A rifle? The woman was holding a rifle. No matter how hard he tried he couldn't pull his gaze away from the weapon that was nearly as long as she was tall."
After reading these first few sentences, I was hooked! And, once I picked this book up it was impossible to put it down. This is such a wonderful and tender love story. I absolutely loved it!
What a wonderful cute book. I laughed and smiled throughout, the characters developed nicely, but the best part for me was Selina speaking. Just visualize her talk and her train of thought was awesome. This is one of the cutest book I've read I awhile.
This is the second time reading Ms Ullick's book. The story grabs you right away. Selina and Michael are honest and say what's on their minds. It may hurt but a commitment was made. They may not be what they expected but they must be open to God's plans. The secondary characters help them to see the true person even ornery Jake. Loads of chuckles and a few tears but Selina and Michael's journey is worth it!!! You may be reading it again too. Glad I have it on so I can enjoy the Bowen family more and more. Thanks again Debra Ullrick!
Michael knew exactly the kind of wife he wanted to marry. When he gets to know the perfect Selena through letters, he decides to marry her by proxy, sight unseen. When Selena arrives wearing trousers, cowboy boots and a cowboy hat, Michael knows he's been deceived. Selena is thrilled to finally meet Michael who she had fallen in love with through the letters her friend, Aimee, had written for her. Since Selena didn't know how to read or write, Aimee wrote the letters that had caused Michael to fall in love with the perfect Selena. However, the real Selena was far from perfect in Michael's estimation. He wanted a southern belle, not a gun-toting tomboy. He wanted to send her back, but knew he had already spoken vows by proxy. Now he was stuck. When Selena realizes that Aimee had deceived Michael by not telling him the truth about her, she feels betrayed by her best friend and greatly disappointed to know she had married an arrogant rich man. She soon realizes that although Michael is rich, he's very kind and caring. Michael sees the kindness in Selena's heart as well, and she's quite beautiful, but can he let go of his dream and fall in love with his wife? This is a sweet story of love that develops slowly for Michael. Selena loves Michael already and continues hoping he will finally love her too. The story is well developed and the characters are very interesting and enjoyable to get to know.
